The Moon? Or the Bolivian Salt Flats?
The adventure began at the Explora Atacama, Chile, with the acclimatization. Atacama is the driest desert on Earth, with the most incredible rock formations - how I imagine Mars.
Each day we were taken by vehicle to a starting point where we hiked, or rode mountain bikes, or went horse riding. After we returned to Explora Atacama for a swim, relaxation and a comfortable night's rest.
The unique conditions at Atacama offer some of the world's best stargazing opportunities. Minimal light pollution and high altitude bring the stars closer to Earth, making them clearer and more vivid for observers.
Crossing into Bolivia, the landscapes were surreal. Shifting from arid desert to the high-altitude beauty of the Andean villages.
A geologist's dream, there are mountains and lakes in every colour of the rainbow due to a variety of minerals. There is also an active volcano, bubbling geysers, flamingos, and a rich array of wildlife.
Arriving at the Bolivian Salt flats felt like we were stepping onto the moon. The world's largest salt flat, it is a vast, pristine, sea of white.
This is truly an incredible journey like no other including luxury remote lodges, delicious home-cooked meals, private vehicles and expert guides.
